Embracing Gratitude and Kindness in Times of Change

As the recent presidential election concludes, we find ourselves stepping into a new chapter. The year 2025 will bring new leadership and, perhaps, a new direction for our country. Emotions were high before and after the elections, but one thing remains constant: we are all Americans, united in the United States. As we move forward, each new day brings fresh opportunities, and I am genuinely grateful for that.

With the holidays approaching, now is the perfect time to reflect on gratitude. Personally, I am incredibly thankful for the amazing people who make up my family business. Our administrative team, instructors, and the wonderful women who lead our company make Evolution Swim Academy a place of support and growth. I’m also grateful for our inspiring students, who continually show us that even the smallest among us can be brave and resilient.

Over the years, I’ve learned how to embrace gratitude, and I’d like to share twelve simple ways that I practice it year-round. My hope is that you find inspiration to incorporate these into your own life.

  1. Practice Daily Gratitude Reflections

Begin or end each day by noting a few things you’re grateful for. It could be as simple as jotting down three things in a gratitude journal. For me, it’s often my family, my business, and my health. Taking this moment each day can set a positive tone.

  1. Express Appreciation to People in Your Life

Take a moment each week to reach out with a thank-you note, text, or email to someone who has impacted you. Recently, I had a heart-to-heart with my mom, expressing how grateful I am for her love and support. It reminded me how powerful these small expressions can be.

  1. Celebrate Small Wins and Progress

Gratitude isn’t reserved for big milestones; celebrate the small victories too. Whether it’s a student putting their head underwater for the first time or mastering a back float, these small steps matter and deserve recognition.

  1. Give Compliments Generously and Sincerely

Take every opportunity to compliment those around you. A sincere acknowledgment of someone’s efforts or qualities can make their day—and it’s free! Recognition is a powerful motivator, especially for the younger generation.

  1. Practice Active Listening and Presence

Show gratitude by being fully present. In a world full of distractions, listening attentively is a gift. Sometimes, this means silencing your phone to engage with a friend or family member fully.

  1. Pay It Forward with Random Acts of Kindness

Seize moments to help others without expecting anything in return. My daughter, Francesca, loves surprising people with flowers outside Trader Joe’s. The joy it brings to both giver and receiver is a reminder of kindness’s ripple effect.

  1. Create a Family or Team Gratitude Ritual

Consider starting a weekly gratitude ritual with loved ones or colleagues. In our family, we have the “Gracious Gobbler” in November, who leaves notes of gratitude each morning. It’s a fun way to highlight acts of kindness and appreciation.

  1. Volunteer and Give Back to the Community

Volunteering is a powerful way to express gratitude. Helping others reinforces what we have and creates a lasting impact. We love supporting the Laguna Beach Food Pantry during the holidays and find great joy in giving back.

  1. Celebrate Anniversaries and Special Moments Thoughtfully

Thoughtful gestures on special dates show people they are valued. Whether it’s a milestone birthday or work anniversary, taking time to acknowledge these moments shows appreciation beyond words.

  1. Express Gratitude to Yourself

Don’t forget to extend gratitude to yourself. Be kind and recognize your own progress. This simple act of self-compassion can make a big difference, especially on tough days.

  1. Show Appreciation Publicly

Publicly recognize contributions within your team or community. Celebrating each other’s efforts can boost morale and encourage a culture of gratitude. Remember: praise in public, and handle critiques in private.

  1. Make a Gratitude Board

Create a visual reminder of the things and people you’re thankful for. A physical board or a section in your notes app can serve as a reminder of the positives in life, helping you stay grounded and grateful.

I feel truly lucky to do what I love and to do it alongside people I respect and appreciate deeply. From my dedicated team members to our wonderful students and the supportive families who make up Evolution Swim Academy, each of you brings joy and purpose to our community.

Happy Thanksgiving!
